Fall 2017
We have several goals for reading workshop. We are trying to build up our stamina for reading. Our goal for the end of the year is that we will be able to read independently for at least 50 minutes. We are working on that goal in class. We will start the year reading independently for 20 minutes. Our reading workshop starts off with a 15 minute mini-lesson on a reading skill. The mini-lesson is then followed by independent reading. Some of the students work with the teacher in a small group. At the end of the class, we gather back together to report out how we used the reading skill in our independent reading books. That is what a typical reading workshop class looks like with the Mountaineers.
Writing class is set up very similar to reading. Writing workshop starts with a mini-lesson (writing summaries or well-organized paragraphs) and then we work independently on the skill. I may work with a group of students on the skill that was just taught during our mini-lesson. At the end of the workshop, we gather together to share our work.
On October 13th, we had the opportunity to meet the author of the book The Inn Between. This book is nominated for the Dorothy Canter Fisher award. We read the book as a read aloud in the beginning of the year. Students were able to ask the author about her book and the process of becoming a published author. Please enjoy the picture below of our visit.
